KUALA LUMPUR – As their first match in the 2016 International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Champions Cup, the Westports Malaysia Dragons will be facing against Al-Shorta from Iraq.

The match will be held live tomorrow, 9th October 2016 in Chenzhou Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium, Chenzhou, China, at 3 p.m. local time.

Al-Shorta is a multi-sport club based in Rusafa District, East Districts of the Tigris River, Baghdad. They are widely regarded as Iraq’s best team for football. They are however fairly new to the basketball scene.

Despite being new to the court, they should not be look down upon as all the teams qualified for this championship are here to represent their respective countries.

In their first match, Al-Shorta were defeated by China’s Xinjiang Flying Tigers by 27 points, 69-96.

Dragons will be facing them head on as their new head Coach Christopher Thomas takes charge. This will be Coach Thomas’ first time leading the team in a tournament.

Excited for the upcoming match, here’s what coach had to say, “Since the last tournament, my team and I have been training almost every day of the week, and I see us getting better without question.”

“It’s going to be a tournament thought because of the level of skill, and the fact that we’re starting off with only 6 healthy players is a huge disadvantage.” said Coach Thomas when asked about his thoughts about the championship cup. “However, the bigger the challenge, the bigger the opportunity.”
