CYBERJAYA – The Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions bested Westports Malaysia Dragons at Cyberjaya on Sunday afternoon in a close defeat, 85-88.

The Malaysian team had a 7 point deficit when Kiwi Gardner made a 3-point shot, followed by Ivan Yeo’s jump shot and Wong Yi Hou’s three to flip the table when the clock had 80 seconds left to go, 83-82.

Dragons were at 85-84 and almost won the game if not for Josh Boone’s last second offensive rebound and lay into the basket to turn the game in the final 6 seconds.

Kiwi Gardner and Wong Yi Hou were the top scorers of the team with 33 points and 14 points respectively. Ivan Yeo however, was tonight’s star with 8 points and 17 rebounds.

Leading his team in rebounds, the young forward(Yeo) said “All this was only achievable because Coach Chris and Yakuub (General Manager of Dragons) have been pushing me real hard these few months.”

“I thought the way we played tonight had was a sense of togetherness,” said Coach Christopher Thomas from Dragons. “I was really happy with the way we played offensively and defensively, but we got to learn how to close games.”

Looking proud of his team, he added, “A path without obstacles is a path that’s not going to lead you anywhere. We’ve had a lot of obstacles and we will face even more, but what that tells me is that we’re on the right path.”

Westports Malaysia Dragons will face Hong Kong Eastern Long Lions again this Friday (3rd March, 8PM) at home in Cyberjaya.
