KUALA LUMPUR – Malaysia triumphed over Indonesia for their third win a row in the basketball event of the SEA Games 2017 here in Kuala Lumpur, 72-57. It was a tight match from the start through to the third quarter, however our female athletes managed to strategize and dominate the final quarter to a 15 point lead win. Despite facing a full team switch in the first quarter, they (Malaysians) manage to finish with a one point lead over the Indonesians, 15-14. Their opponents then came back stronger in the second half, scoring from behind the 3-point line to snatch the lead from our Malaysian athlete by a single point, 30-31. Every play the Malaysian girls made, Indonesia replies just as well. Up until mid-third quarter, Malaysians were on the downside until Pang Hui Pin made a three point play to snatch the lead back, 41-39. From then on, it was all good for Malaysia even through the last quarter as they dominated the last 10 minutes; Indonesia were unable to penetrate through their defense. Only 5 minutes into the last quarter was when Indonesia made their first point by free throw by Henny Sutjiono, 58-48. The Indonesians only managed 10 points in the last quarter. Pang Hui Pin was tonight’s best player as she made a double-double with 14 points paired with 10 rebounds and 7 assists. “We were a little nervous as the game started as we were sizing them up but we managed to pull through in the last quarter, making better passes and having better positioning,” said Pang Hui Pin. The Malaysian Women’s team will play against Philippines this Thursday 24th August. “This was an expected tough match and we pulled off a win, our focus will now be on the Philippines as they are a very formidable team.” said Coach Sze of the Malaysian team.
