KUALA LUMPUR – The KL Dragons signs Sundiata Gaines from the United States to play for season 9 of the ASEAN Basketball League. If you’re a big fan of the NBA, you might have heard of Gaines. He was the player that surprised Lebron James in 2010 when Utah Jazz went up against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Before that game, he was only an NBA D-League player who had just signed a 10-day contract with the Jazz on 5th January 2010. But in those 10 days, Sundiata made an impact in the NBA scene in his second NBA game debut with the Utah. Against Lebron James and the Cavaliers, he hit a buzzer beating 3-point shot that won the game for his team, 97-96. That was his first 3-point shot in the NBA and it saw Gaines signing a full season with the Jazz, which then led him to sign with Minnesota Timberwolves for the following season, then Toronto Raptors and the New Jersey Nets. “The shot really got my career started, and I’ve taken advantage of the opportunity,” said Sundiata Gaines. Growing up, Sundiata played highschool basketball in Queens, New York where he averaged 28 points per game, played for University of Georgia for 4 years, then for NGC Cantu in Italy for one season before eventually getting picked up by the Jazz. 32 this year, Gaines has played basketball professionally all over the world and needless to say, his vast experience of the game will be an advantage to have for the Dragons. An interesting fact about Gaines is that he has had a near death experience when he was only 4-years old. He was accidentally shot in the neck by an off duty police officer when the officer dropped his suitcase with a gun in it. He said, “It reminds me, you’ve got a second chance at life, so you’re here for a reason.” Andri Reza, Dragons’ general manager says, “Gaines is an experienced point guard who has spent a number of years in the NBA. Gritty, physical and his ability to drive the paint, he’s definitely going to be one of the guys who will get points for us.” Dragons will play their first away game of ABL 9 on Nov 23rd against Singapore Slingers at 8PM, OCBC Arena.
