KUALA LUMPUR – The Westports Malaysia Dragons toppled Alab Pilipinas at home court Dragons’ Den last night 72-71 despite having one less import. Winston Shepard was absent from the bench last night due to calf injuries. Despite that, he still showed up for the game to cheer for our team. “They played really well without me and I’m really proud of them,” said Shepard. The Dragons were shooting at 37% field goal accuracy which was on par with Alab’s 39%, however their 3 pointer accuracy of 38% is what kept the team afloat. Nnanna Egwu was shooting at 66% from beyond the arc, knocking down 4 out of 6 3-pointers throughout the game. Holding their own against Alab for all 40 minutes was impressive enough, but to beat them even by 1 point, the Dragonforce has since improved themselves since the season opener. Coach Jamie Pearlman chimed in, “To be one import down, and we do what we did tonight, I just couldn’t be more proud of the guys.” Jonathan Wong Zhong Han was named player of the game with 21 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals. “I felt Jon made some big time plays down the stretch there which was just crucial for us.” “He was able to make those shots because Nnanna Egwu was shooting shots earlier in the game so that enabled Jon to get behind their defense for a few crucial lay-ups,” said head coach Pearlman. Egwu finished with 15 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals and was the core component of the game for the Dragons. He received his 4th foul in the final quarter which made fans in the stadium nervous but we still came out on top. On Shepard, he said, “He should be fine for the next game, he was definitely touch and go for this game. He has to keep doing rehab and we’ll evaluate him with a fitness test on Friday, that’s when for sure we’ll know if he’s in.” Malaysia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, YB Dato’ Saifuddin along with the excellencies head of mission from 9 ASEAN countries were present during this game which most likely gave motivation for the home team to do good. Next game is this Sunday the 13th against Zhuhai Wolf Warriors at 2:30PM, MABA Stadium, Kuala Lumpur.
