KUALA LUMPUR – Hong Kong Eastern held us off the paint with their full force that saw Marcus Elliot alongside import teammates Samuel Deguara and O’Darien Bassett to outlast us, 79-70. Up against season 7’s champions, our team did well stats wise on the court away from home despite the loss but were unable to convert into a win against Hong Kong’s massive 14 shots from beyond the arc compared to our 8 sinked shots. All-rounder Winston Shepard gets a double-double again with 26 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists which wasn’t too far off from teammate Nnanna Egwu that finished with 20 points and 7 rebounds. “We need to stay aggresive in transition and improve our shot selection in the half-court and then just need players to step up and make shots,” said coach Jamie Pearlman before the game. The game was clearly tipped in favour of the home team last night at Southorn Stadium, Hong Kong in the second half but the Westports Malaysia Dragons did not go down without a fight. Our team came back in the last quarter with a 17-5 run to close the gap down to 4 points just under 4 minutes left. With their win, Hong Kong now moves up into 5th place with 9 wins 7 losses while Dragons moves down to 7th place with a 5-5 record. 13 more games to go for the Dragons this season until the league determines which 8 team moves on into the playoffs and things are looking not too bad for the team but we definitely have room for improvement. Next away game is this Friday (25th Jan) 8PM against the league’s number one spot, Alab Pilipinas. Dragons have played 3 out of 5 back-to-back games on the road and their next one might just be the toughest as Alab has not lost a game at home yet. We broke their winning spree once, can we end their winning spree yet again?
