KUALA LUMPUR – Second seed Formosa Dreamers took the win over us last Sunday afternoon at Changhua County Stadium in Taiwan by 6 points, 82-76. The Westports Malaysia Dragons were out performed by the Formosa Dreamers at their home court, went into the second half of the game with a 15-point deficit (46-31). After the break, the Dreamers then secured a 20-point lead when their team captain Malcolm Miller shot a 3-point to make it 51-31 but the Dragons never stopped then and were able to cut down that point gap to a hopeful 9 point by quarter end (64-55). In the final quarter, Dragons were closing in on a comeback when Nnanna Egwu sunk a shot for 3-points to make it 72-68 with 2 minutes left on the clock, but the following missing transition points paired with Dreamers’ offensive force proved to be fatal for the Malaysian team. Down by 8 points (78-70) with 30 seconds to go, Winston Shepard made 3 successful attempts at the basket but each basket was replied swiftly by the Dreamers which shows how well they are in transition. [Off the bench] Jonathan Wong once again achieves double digits from the bench with 15 points 4 rebounds and a single assist. “I knew I needed to step up to the challenge for the team, so when the time came, I had to perform,” said Wong. Westports Malaysia Dragons will play Singapore Slingers this Friday (22nd Feb) at MABA Stadium for the 2018/19 Straits Cup – a special cup played only by the Dragons and Slingers in a back to back series of two games. The second game will be played at Singapore’s OCBC Arena where the Slingers will defend their home the following Sunday, 24th Feb.
