Kuala Lumpur, Saturday: - Today saw the third and final match between the KL Dragons and Philippine Patriots take place at MABA Stadium, Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.
The KL Dragons first met the Patriots on 15 November, where the Patriots won the match with a 10 point lead, ending 73 – 63 against the Dragons. On their next match on 19 December, KL Dragons picked up the pace and reduced Patriots win to just six points.
Today the KL Dragons made full use of their imports, sending in Roel Hugnatan, Fhadzmir Bandaying, Rudy Lingganay, Jamal Brown and Chris Kuete as the starting lineup to go up against Philippine Patriots’ Brandon Powell, Jason Dixon, Baclao Siverino, John Alcaraz and Warren Ybanez.
Patriots’ Brandon Powell won the jumpball agains Dragons’ Jamal Brown. The Patriots opened scoring after Powell was fouled by Dragons’ Chris Kuete, but Rudy Lingganay of the KL Dragons quickly retaliated by scoring 4 points to give the Dragons an early lead on the Patriots. The Dragons continued to push hard in the first quarter, which ended with them taking an 11 point lead, ending 21 – 10 against the Patriots.
In the second quarter the game was starting to heat up and the KL Dragons were successfully maintaining their lead, but with 6:15 left to the quarter, a scuffle broke out between the players from both teams. Three key players from the KL Dragons, Chris Kuete, Koh Way Tek and Kwaan Yoong Jing were handed disqualifying fouls and
ejected from the match, but the KL Dragons were still able to maintain their lead, ending the quarter 44 - 32 against the Patriots.
It was in the third quarter that the Patriots took full advantage of the situation and upped their game, and with 4 minutes left on the clock, the Patriots had reduced the Dragons’ lead to just 7 points and with less than one minute remaining had evened the score 51-all. Fhadzmir Bandaying gave the KL Dragons a one-point lead after Rudy Lingganay was fouled by Patriots’ John Alcaraz, ending the third quarter 52 – 51 against the Patriots. In the final quarter the KL Dragons, not letting the absence of three players bring their spirit down, took control of the match and strengthened their defense and pressed the Philippine Patriots’. At the end of the final buzzer, the KL Dragons had won the match 77 – 59.
KL Dragons made 40% of their field goals compared to Patriots’ 26%, with Rudy Lingganay leading the KL Dragons with 14 points, followed by Roel Hugnatan and Jamal Brown with 13 points each. Brown also lead the team with 11 rebounds. Jason Dixon was the Patriots’ top scorer with 19 points, followed with Robert Wainwright with 12 points. Jason Dixon also lead the team with 15 rebounds.
